Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais has made history as the first woman and first Emirati to lead the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) for the 2026–2029 term. Her election, supported by a majority of more than 160 countries, reflects global confidence in her leadership and the UAE’s growing influence in tourism and international diplomacy.
The announcement came during the 26th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from November 7 to 11, where a UAE delegation led by Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, participated actively.
Al Nowais’ rise to the top post followed a rigorous nomination and election process, confirming her exceptional credentials and international recognition. This milestone achievement underscores the UAE’s long-standing commitment to empowering women and promoting Emirati talent on the global stage.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri described the election as a landmark moment, not just for the UAE but for the Arab region and the global tourism sector. He highlighted the country’s success in sustainable tourism development, advanced infrastructure, and cultural diversity, all of which have positioned the UAE as a leading global tourism hub. He also noted the pivotal role of Emirati airlines in connecting East and West, facilitating travel, trade, and cultural exchange.
Al Nowais addressed the General Assembly, emphasizing tourism as more than an economic sector. She called it a bridge for human connection, peace, and sustainable development. She stressed the importance of partnerships, innovation, and community-focused tourism strategies to drive growth and inclusivity, especially for women, youth, and local communities.
Her vision for the UNWTO focuses on transforming challenges into opportunities, strengthening national economies, and enhancing global tourism sustainability. She aims to expand capacity-building, knowledge sharing, and financial support for developing nations to ensure tourism continues to be a key driver of inclusive and sustainable growth worldwide.
The 26th UNWTO General Assembly also covered topics such as digital transformation, tourism competitiveness, professional skills development, and sustainable tourism models that protect the environment while fostering economic growth. These discussions underline the sector’s ongoing evolution, particularly in the post-pandemic era, where resilience and diversification are crucial.
With Shaikha Al Nowais at the helm, the UNWTO enters a new era of inclusive, innovative, and sustainable global tourism leadership, reflecting both the UAE’s strategic vision and the international community’s confidence in her capability to guide the sector forward.
