Serena Williams, the celebrated seven-time Grand Slam champion, is making a notable comeback to the Australian Open in 2026. The iconic American tennis star last participated in the tournament in 2021, where she faced a defeat in the second round against Italy’s Sara Errani. Throughout her 21 appearances at the Australian Open, Williams has never claimed the title, finishing as a runner-up twice—first in 2003 against her sister Venus and again in 2017.
At the age of 45, Serena Williams will make history as the oldest woman to contest in the main draw of the Australian Open, breaking the record previously held by Kimiko Date of Japan, who was 44 during her elimination in 2015.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Williams stated, “I am thrilled to return to Australia and can’t wait to compete this summer. I have cherished memories from there, and I am grateful for the chance to revisit a place that has significantly shaped my career.”
Alongside the Australian Open, Serena has confirmed her participation in the Hobart International, a precursor event that kicks off on January 12. This tournament will also see other top winners such as Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu.
Her return is eagerly awaited by tennis lovers globally, as Williams continues to motivate many with her unwavering commitment and passion for the game. This comeback signifies a pivotal moment in tennis history, emphasizing that age does not limit one’s ability to compete at the pinnacle of the sport.
