HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently visited the Hassyan Complex to check on the progress of the desalination plant project’s first phase. The project uses seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology and is a major part of DEWA’s plan to boost Dubai’s desalinated water production.

The first phase of the project has a production capacity of 180 million gallons of water per day. It’s already more than halfway completed, with 55% of the work done, and is expected to be finished by 2027. The project costs AED 3.377 billion and will be the largest water production project in the world to use SWRO technology. It is also DEWA’s first project using the Independent Water Producer (IWP) model.

During his visit, Al Tayer received a detailed update on the project from officials at "Hassyan Water Company A." This project is important for improving Dubai’s water infrastructure and is part of the city's Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030. Al Tayer was joined by Waleed Bin Salman, the Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence, along with other senior officials and engineers from DEWA.

Al Tayer highlighted that this project supports the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed’s vision focuses on providing a world-class infrastructure for energy and water to keep up with Dubai’s rapid growth and meet the rising demand for these services.

“We are committed to achieving the goals of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aims to provide 100% clean energy in Dubai by 2050,” Al Tayer said. “This project is part of our efforts to ensure water security in Dubai through sustainable sources. It also supports the Dubai Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030, which focuses on improving water resources and using advanced technologies.”

Al Tayer also mentioned that DEWA is building more desalination plants that use seawater reverse osmosis technology. By 2030, DEWA plans to add 240 million gallons per day of desalinated water to the city’s supply. By that time, the total desalinated water capacity in Dubai will reach 735 million gallons per day. Additionally, DEWA aims to produce all of this desalinated water using clean energy from renewable sources and waste heat by 2030.

This project is just one part of DEWA's efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure and ensure a sustainable, clean water supply for Dubai's future.
