Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative by launching the trial operation of the world’s first electric abra, manufactured using 3D printing technology, in partnership with the private sector. This innovative abra, which can accommodate 20 passengers, has been meticulously designed to retain the traditional aesthetic and identity of the classic abra while integrating modern technology. This project is a significant step towards realizing Dubai’s 3D printing strategy, which aims to drastically reduce manufacturing time by 90%, cut costs by 30%, and lower operation and maintenance expenses by 30%. Additionally, it aligns with RTA’s commitment to environmental sustainability in maritime transport.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating: "The trial operation of the electric abra manufactured using 3D printing technology, along with the improvement of traditional abra stations project, is part of RTA’s master plan to enhance the marine transport services, a vital mobility means in Dubai, adding much value to the maritime transport sector."

The newly manufactured abra boasts numerous advanced technical features, including the longest monocoque structure created using 3D printing technology, measuring 11 meters in length and 3.1 meters in width. It operates with an electric propulsion system powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries. During the trial phase, which will take place at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line, the performance of this innovative abra will be closely monitored and compared with existing 20-passenger fiberglass abras.

The manufacturing process of this pioneering abra involved collaboration with several global companies. Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi took the lead in manufacturing, with Mitsubishi of Japan providing the materials used in the construction and 3D printing of the abra. Siemens of Germany supervised the programming and calibration of the printer, while Torqeedo of Germany supplied the electric motors. TASNEEF Company ensured that the manufacturing process complied with all safety standards.

In addition to the launch of the electric abra, the RTA is also working on upgrading traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek. This project aims to enhance marine transport services, improve safety and security standards, comply with the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination, and elevate the overall aesthetic and functionality of the traditional abra stations. These stations currently serve over 14 million passengers annually.

The improvement project includes the enhancement of four traditional abra stations. In February 2023, RTA completed the renovation of the Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station, followed by the upgrade of the Deira Old Souq Station last February. The renovations of the Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station are expected to be completed by August 2025.

The upgrades include replacing all floating docks to ensure passenger safety, providing retail spaces for better customer service, facilities for employees and operators, and bike racks to promote transport integration. The project also involves increasing and improving passenger waiting areas, with priority seating and dedicated spaces for People of Determination, expanding docking spaces by 15%, shaded waiting areas by 100%, and commercial spaces by 27%, while increasing compliance with the Dubai Code by 87%. Sustainable, low-cost materials will be used to reduce annual maintenance costs by 10%.

Dubai’s marine transport sector has witnessed significant growth in the number of transport means, stations, and passengers, especially since the completion of the Dubai Water Canal, which connects Dubai Creek to the coastal area. The sector is poised for further enhancement with the completion of urban and tourist facilities along the canal, as well as the construction of additional marine transport stations. These developments will make marine transport an increasingly attractive option for citizens, residents, and tourists looking to explore and enjoy the scenic beauty of Dubai Creek, the Dubai Water Canal, and the city’s beaches.
