During his annual end-of-year press briefing in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that the anticipated deceleration of Russia’s economy in 2025 is a deliberate strategy. He explained that the central bank has intentionally slowed economic growth as part of its efforts to control inflation.

Putin noted that the economy experienced a robust growth rate of 4.3% in 2024, but forecasts indicate it will drop to approximately 1% in 2025. This decrease stems from the strict measures implemented by the central bank aimed at curbing rising prices that have been impacting individuals and businesses across the nation.

According to him, these initiatives are yielding positive outcomes. Inflation, previously at around 9.5%, is projected to decrease to between 5.5% and 5.7% by 2025. He emphasized that this adjustment is essential for restoring balance in the economy and ensuring long-term stability.

Putin highlighted the consequences of unrestrained economic growth, which can lead to alarming price hikes. By moderating growth, both the government and central bank aspire to keep inflation in check, even if this leads to slower growth temporarily.

He reassured citizens that despite the anticipated slowdown, Russia's financial state remains robust, and national budget allocations fully cover the military's needs—a crucial point given that military expenditure is a significant portion of government outlays.

Economists frequently refer to this approach as “cooling” the economy, suggesting it's characterized by elevated interest rates and stricter financial protocols to limit spending and borrowing. While growth may decline, such methodologies are often utilized to lower inflation rates and safeguard monetary value.

Putin's statements reflect a clear prioritization of price stability over aggressive economic expansion. The government appears prepared to accept slower growth in the short term to establish a more secure economic future.
