On Monday, India’s reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) encountered an unexpected challenge during its 64th mission. The PSLV-C62 rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 10:18 am, bringing along the EOS-N1 satellite and 14 co-passenger satellites. The launch was smooth initially, but the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) later reported a deviation was detected during the third stage of flight.
ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan emphasized that engineers are diligently analyzing the flight data to decipher the anomaly. He refrained from labeling the mission a success or failure, indicating a thoughtful approach as the agency prepares to make an informed announcement. ISRO has pledged to provide comprehensive updates once the analysis concludes.
This mission held particular significance, occurring after a PSLV failure in 2025. The PSLV has earned a reputation as one of India’s most dependable launch vehicles, with many successful missions under its belt. Issues concerning a trusted rocket invariably attract global scrutiny. Nevertheless, experts remind us that hiccups in space exploration can lead to advancements and improvements in technology.
PSLV-C62 launched a total of 15 satellites, with the primary payload being EOS-N1, intended to boost India’s Earth observation capabilities. Among the passengers included several smaller satellites, notably Anvesha, a surveillance satellite crafted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Anvesha aims to deliver high-resolution imaging to help India meticulously monitor and map sensitive areas. Additionally, the Kestrel Initial Demonstrator was included for a controlled re-entry mission.
This launch also marked a pivotal milestone for India’s burgeoning private space sector, as Hyderabad's Dhruva Space made history by contributing seven satellites to a single PSLV mission. This showcases the increasing involvement of private enterprises alongside ISRO in shaping India's space narrative.
Despite the deviation raising eyebrows, ISRO’s composed response highlights its vast experience and unwavering confidence. Space missions are intricate, where even minor variations in flight can trigger thorough investigations. Such assessments often empower engineers to enhance designs and preempt future challenges.
As ISRO compiles its final report, the nation holds its breath. Whatever the conclusion, this mission encapsulates the ongoing trials and triumphs of India’s space endeavors. A commitment to transparency, rigorous analysis, and unyielding improvement is at the core of ISRO's philosophy. As the data review moves forward, the emphasis remains on extracting lessons from this incident to forge ahead with more robust and secure missions.
