Pope Leo Backs Trump Gaza Plan, Urges Hamas Cooperation

Rome, October 1, 2025 – Pope Leo on Tuesday expressed cautious optimism about U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly unveiled 20-point peace plan for Gaza, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and respect for human life.

“There are very interesting elements in the plan,” the pontiff told reporters outside his Castel Gandolfo summer residence. “I hope Hamas will accept it within the established timeframe.”

The plan, which was formulated without Hamas’ participation, calls for the group to disarm—a demand it has historically resisted. Hamas officials have indicated they will review the proposal carefully and respond in “good faith.”

In addition to commenting on the peace proposal, Pope Leo highlighted concerns about an international aid flotilla heading to Gaza. The humanitarian convoy faces potential interception by Israeli forces enforcing a naval blockade as the country continues its operations against Hamas.

“From all sides, people are saying, ‘Let’s hope that there will not be violence, that people are respected.’ That’s very important,” the pope said, underscoring the need for restraint and protection of civilians amidst ongoing tensions.
