In a startling incident at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by a 20-year-old assailant identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks. The young man, hailing from Bethel Park near the rally venue, managed to evade security and positioned himself atop a nearby building armed with a rifle.
Minutes before he opened fire, three police snipers stationed inside the building where Crooks took position spotted him. Despite attempts to alert security, Crooks proceeded to shoot, tragically killing a bystander and injuring two spectators before a swift response from a US Secret Service sniper ended his rampage.
The Secret Service has come under scrutiny following the incident, questioned about how an armed individual could breach security and take such a perilous vantage point over 500 feet from Trump, who is campaigning for a return to office against President Joe Biden.
Footage from mobile devices captured panicked warnings about the gunman on the roof before shots were fired. CBS News reported that one of the snipers observed Crooks on multiple occasions, noting his movements and actions leading up to the attack. Authorities detailed how Crooks, initially spotted outside the building, returned intermittently before finally positioning himself on the rooftop with a backpack, possibly using an air conditioning unit for access.
Despite efforts by additional officers responding to the scene, it was a Secret Service sniper who ultimately neutralized Crooks, preventing further harm to the rally attendees and bringing a swift end to the terrifying episode.
