Trump's victory came at a time of significant turmoil in the Middle East, following the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023. The conflict was ignited by an unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group. This escalation has left the region in a state of crisis, with both sides suffering heavy losses.
During the phone call, Abbas congratulated Trump on his election victory and affirmed his commitment to working with the new US president to achieve lasting peace in Gaza. He emphasized the need for peace based on international legitimacy and the recognition of Palestinian rights.
In response, Trump assured Abbas that he would actively work towards ending the ongoing war in Gaza. He expressed his commitment to engaging with both Abbas and other relevant parties in the region, as well as international stakeholders, in an effort to establish peace. Trump's statement highlighted his intention to bring the conflict to a close, stressing that he would not allow the situation to continue.
While Trump made efforts to emphasize his desire for peace during his election campaign, he also maintained a strong pro-Israel stance, positioning himself as one of the country’s most ardent allies. Throughout the campaign, Trump reiterated his support for Israel and promised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he would "finish the job" against Hamas. This included the aim to weaken or eliminate the group, which is classified as a terrorist organization by many nations, including the US and Israel.
The call between Trump and Abbas sets the stage for potential future negotiations and efforts to address the Gaza crisis, as both leaders aim to navigate the complex geopolitical dynamics of the region.
