In the early hours of Friday morning, Pakistan experienced an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale. The tremor struck at a depth of 135 kilometers, according to seismic reports. The quake was felt across several regions, causing brief panic among residents but no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
The earthquake occurred in one of the most seismically active areas in the world, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. This region, including Afghanistan, northern India, and Pakistan, frequently experiences earthquakes due to the movement of these massive plates. The collision of tectonic plates makes Pakistan particularly vulnerable to strong earthquakes.
Shallow earthquakes, which occur closer to the Earth's surface, tend to be more dangerous because the seismic waves have less distance to travel, causing stronger shaking and greater potential damage. However, this recent earthquake, occurring at a depth of 135 km, is considered relatively deep, which reduces its immediate destructive impact.
Several provinces in Pakistan are especially prone to seismic activity. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are located along the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Punjab and Sindh lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate. Balochistan, in particular, sits near the active boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Even regions like Sindh, which are less exposed, still face some risk because of their geological location.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and residents have been advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines during any seismic activity. Scientists emphasize the importance of preparedness in Pakistan, given the country’s history of moderate to strong earthquakes caused by its position along major fault lines.
