New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is set to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday, November 21. This will be the first meeting between Mamdani and Trump since Mamdani’s historic victory in the New York City Mayoral election on November 4.
Mamdani, who became the first South Asian and Muslim mayor of New York City, said he plans to work with President Trump on any agenda that benefits New Yorkers, despite having many disagreements with the President. “I intend to make it clear to President Trump that I will work with him on any agenda that benefits New Yorkers. If an agenda hurts New Yorkers, I will also be the first to say so,” Mamdani told reporters.
Mamdani’s team reached out to the White House to schedule this meeting, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to address critical issues facing the city, including affordability and public safety. “We will work with anyone to make life more affordable for the more than eight and a half million people who call this city home,” he said. He also noted that it is customary for an incoming mayor to meet with the White House, highlighting the mutual reliance between the city and federal government.
The meeting comes amid a challenging time for New Yorkers, as the city faces a rising cost of living and other national crises. Mamdani acknowledged that voters supported him to address these issues, saying that both he and President Trump are very different candidates, but share the responsibility to improve life in the city.
In a post on social media, Trump confirmed the meeting, calling Mamdani the “communist” Mayor of New York City and stating that the meeting will take place in the Oval Office. Trump has been critical of Mamdani’s policies, warning before the election that his victory would be a “complete and total economic and social disaster” for New York City.
During his victory speech, Mamdani highlighted his background as an immigrant and criticized Trump’s policies, particularly his approach to immigration. Mamdani said New York City would continue to be “powered by immigrants” and stressed that his leadership represents a new chapter for the city.
Mamdani emerged victorious in a closely-watched mayoral race, defeating Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who had received Trump’s endorsement shortly before the elections. Mamdani had been the front-runner for months and won with strong support from voters seeking solutions to affordability, public safety, and other pressing issues in New York City.
The upcoming meeting between Mamdani and Trump is expected to focus on collaboration where possible, while also addressing points of disagreement. Mamdani’s team has emphasized that their priority is improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers.
