The 2025 U.S. Open is heating up as tennis fans witness some of the best matches of the tournament so far. On Monday, former world number one players Naomi Osaka and Iga Swiatek showcased their incredible skills to secure their spots in the quarterfinals. Their performances reminded fans why these players were once ranked at the very top of women’s tennis.
Naomi Osaka Dominates Coco Gauff
Naomi Osaka delivered an impressive performance against American star Coco Gauff. The match, which was highly anticipated by fans around the world, took place at the famous Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Osaka won convincingly with scores of 6-3, 6-2.
This victory marked Osaka’s return to a major quarterfinal since 2021. Her strong serve, quick reflexes, and calm demeanor on the court helped her control the match from start to finish. Osaka will now face Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, who is ranked 11th in the world, in the next round. The winner of that match will move on to the semifinals.

Iga Swiatek Bounces Back Against Ekaterina Alexandrova
Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek also secured her place in the quarterfinals. Swiatek faced Ekaterina Alexandrova and had a challenging start. Alexandrova took an early lead, putting Swiatek behind 3-1 in the first set. However, Swiatek quickly regained her rhythm and won the match with scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Swiatek, who is aiming for her second U.S. Open title and seventh Grand Slam overall, said after the match, “At the beginning, I felt like she was playing really fast. I wanted to find my rhythm, but later on I really felt like I was in my bubble and in my zone.”
In her next match, Swiatek will play against either American Amanda Anisimova or Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia. Swiatek emphasized that she is not worrying about her next opponent yet and will focus on preparing after seeing who wins.
Exciting Matches on the Men’s Side
The men’s quarterfinals also saw some thrilling action. Canadian player Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded 25th, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Andrey Rublev. Auger-Aliassime won in straight sets with scores of 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. This victory was significant because it marked only the second time he has beaten Rublev in nine career meetings.
Auger-Aliassime, who is 25 years old, is now in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the fourth time. He said after the match, “As I won the first set, I felt like I was in control of the match. It’s a good win considering our head-to-head and how good he is as a player.” Rublev, seeded 15th, showed frustration at points during the match and even slammed his racket after losing a point in the second set.
Other Men’s Matches
Two other players advanced smoothly to the quarterfinals. Australian Alex de Minaur and Italian Lorenzo Musetti both won their matches in straight sets. De Minaur will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the upcoming quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Italian Jannik Sinner delivered a dominant performance, defeating Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. Sinner, who has been defeated only once this season by Carlos Alcaraz, will face Musetti, the 10th seed, in the next round on Wednesday.
Women’s Doubles Action
Monday was also an exciting day for women’s doubles. Tennis legends Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating the 12th-seeded team of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai. After the win, Venus Williams made a playful comment saying it was time for her sister Serena Williams to return to action. This victory adds excitement to the doubles tournament as fans hope to see more great matches from the Williams sisters.

Tuesday promises more thrilling tennis action. In the men’s quarterfinals:
