New York witnessed a thrilling night of tennis as American star Amanda Anisimova turned the tables on Iga Swiatek, the world’s second-ranked player. Just two months ago, Anisimova had suffered one of the toughest defeats of her career — a crushing double-bagel loss at Wimbledon against the same opponent. But this time, under the bright lights of the US Open, Anisimova wrote a completely different story.
She defeated Swiatek 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets, booking her first-ever place in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.
Speaking after her victory, a delighted Anisimova said, “I’ve been having the run of my life here. On the first day I came to New York, I just wanted to survive the first round. To now be in the semi-finals after what happened at Wimbledon feels like a dream. It’s really special for me.”
The 24-year-old American, seeded eighth, will now face either two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka or Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals. That clash will decide who earns the right to fight for the women’s singles crown.

How the Match Unfolded
Swiatek came into this quarter-final as the clear favourite. She had won her first Wimbledon title earlier in the summer and had also lifted the Cincinnati Open trophy in August. Bookmakers had placed her as the top contender for the US Open title.
The Polish star started strongly, breaking Anisimova’s serve in the very first game. But Anisimova, determined not to repeat her Wimbledon nightmare, fought back immediately. She regained her rhythm, matched Swiatek’s power from the baseline, and eventually took the first set 6-4 when Swiatek sent a forehand long.
The second set told a similar story. Swiatek again got an early break, but Anisimova refused to give in. She broke back for 2-2 and then capitalized on Swiatek’s mistakes, including a costly double fault. Serving with confidence and striking clean winners, Anisimova raced to a match point.
Swiatek saved two match points with grit, but luck wasn’t on her side. A net cord handed Anisimova the final point and the biggest win of her career so far.
Swiatek, showing grace in defeat, admitted, “I kind of have to let it go and just focus on the next one.”
Osaka Back in the Spotlight
Anisimova’s next opponent will be decided by the winner of Naomi Osaka and Karolina Muchova’s clash. Osaka, a two-time champion in New York, is showing glimpses of her best tennis after returning to the sport following the birth of her daughter in 2023.
In the fourth round, Osaka produced a dominant display to defeat third seed Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2, reminding fans of the player who once ruled women’s tennis. If she wins against Muchova, she will face Anisimova in a blockbuster semi-final.
Auger-Aliassime’s Hard-Fought Win
While Anisimova was creating headlines on the women’s side, Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime was busy battling his way into the semi-finals of the men’s draw.
The 25-year-old defeated Australia’s Alex de Minaur in a gripping four-set contest that lasted over four hours. The scoreline read 4-6, 7-6 (9/7), 7-5, 7-6 (7/4), showing just how close the battle was.
This marks Auger-Aliassime’s second appearance in the US Open semi-finals, his first coming back in 2021. The Canadian, who has faced ups and downs over the past few years, was visibly emotional after the victory.
“Some days you don’t feel your best, but I was ready to dig deep and give everything I had,” he said. “It feels amazing to be back in the semi-finals. Four years ago feels like a lifetime, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”
De Minaur’s Struggles in Grand Slams
For Alex de Minaur, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow. The 26-year-old Australian has now played six Grand Slam quarter-finals — and lost every single one of them.
Reflecting on the match, a disappointed De Minaur said, “Right now I’m looking at this like a wasted opportunity. I felt I had chances, but I didn’t take them.”
The Road Ahead in the Men’s Draw
In the other men’s quarter-final, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti is set to face an almost impossible task against his countryman Jannik Sinner.
Sinner, the reigning champion, has been in sensational form throughout the tournament. He demolished Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth round, a performance so clinical that Bublik compared him to “an AI-generated player.”
Musetti, seeded 10th, has already lost twice to Sinner in past meetings and knows the size of the challenge. “He’s the best player in the world. This is the biggest challenge we have in our sport. But I want to try and break his amazing run,” Musetti said.
A Tournament Full of Drama and Dreams
The US Open has always been known for producing unforgettable moments, and this year is proving no different. For Anisimova, it is a journey of redemption, rising from one of the lowest points in her career to now standing two wins away from her first Grand Slam title. For Auger-Aliassime, it is about resilience, fighting back after years of setbacks to re-establish himself among the elite.
With Naomi Osaka making a strong return, Swiatek vowing to bounce back, and Jannik Sinner looking nearly unstoppable, the coming days promise even more drama, excitement, and inspiration for tennis fans around the world.
