In a move that signals a major step toward deeper desktop integration, OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, a natural language interface designed exclusively for Mac. The acquisition aims to bring ChatGPT beyond the browser — right into users’ everyday workflow.
The news was shared by Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, who called Sky “one of the most thoughtful AI experiences on desktop.” Sky enables users to write, plan, code, and manage tasks through simple natural language commands while understanding what’s happening on their screen — effectively becoming an AI co-pilot for macOS.
According to OpenAI, the entire Sky team will join the company, bringing their deep macOS expertise to enhance ChatGPT’s desktop experience. Turley said the acquisition “accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day,” hinting at tighter integration with native Mac apps.
Sky was built by a small, design-focused team led by Ari Weinstein, known for his work in building intuitive, automation-driven interfaces. Weinstein described Sky as an AI that “floats over your desktop to help you think and create,” emphasizing the goal of making computers more natural and collaborative.
The deal was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo, and approved by OpenAI’s independent Transaction and Audit Committees. Notably, an investment fund associated with Sam Altman held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated before the acquisition.
With Sky now part of OpenAI, users can expect ChatGPT to evolve from a conversational assistant to an active desktop companion, capable of assisting across multiple apps and tasks in real time. The acquisition marks a significant step in OpenAI’s mission to make AI a seamless part of everyday computing.
