In a historic moment for equality and remembrance, King Charles will unveil the UK’s first LGBT military memorial on Monday at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The emotional ceremony marks the monarch’s first official engagement in support of the LGBT community, honouring those who served in silence and suffered under the British military’s ban on LGBT officers, which was lifted only in 2000.
The memorial, titled “Open Letter,” is a government-funded bronze sculpture designed to reflect the pain, courage, and resilience of LGBT military veterans. Shaped like a crumpled, free-standing letter, it bears engraved words from real letters and testimonies once used to persecute LGBT service members. This symbolic design serves as both a reminder of past injustice and a powerful gesture of reconciliation for those who endured discrimination while serving their country.
King Charles, the commander-in-chief of the British armed forces, is expected to lay flowers at the site to honour all LGBT personnel and veterans. His presence sends a strong message of compassion and recognition, marking a significant shift in the monarchy’s support for inclusivity and acceptance within the armed forces.
For many in attendance, the unveiling is deeply personal. Brigadier Claire Phillips, who joined the army in 1995 when being openly gay was still prohibited, described the memorial as “an incredible representation of people who were so deeply damaged by the ban.” She added, “This design uses the voices of our veterans to describe how it felt to be subject to the ban — and to begin that process of reconciliation. I’m deeply honoured to be here today.”
Similarly, Sergeant Alastair Smith, who joined the army in 1998, shared that while the military culture has changed over the years, discrimination still lingers in parts of society. “There are people from the LGBT community who have that determination to serve their country despite the odds,” he said.
The unveiling of the LGBT military memorial follows recommendations from an independent investigation commissioned by the British government, which uncovered decades of systemic abuse, including dismissals, harassment, and even sexual assaults targeting LGBT personnel. In response, the government has now offered compensation of up to £70,000 ($93,947) to victims affected by the discriminatory ban.
The Open Letter memorial is more than just a statue — it’s a testament to bravery, loss, and eventual recognition. For the LGBT veterans who once faced punishment for their identity, this moment is a long-awaited public acknowledgment of their service and sacrifice. It represents a nation finally confronting its past and embracing the values of equality, respect, and inclusion.
