A devastating train derailment in Oaxaca, Mexico has claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals and left nearly 100 others injured. This unfortunate incident took place along the Interoceanic train route, a crucial line connecting the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. The train was carrying 241 passengers along with nine crew members when it derailed.
According to reports from the Mexican Navy, which is responsible for the operation of the railway network, 98 people sustained injuries, with 36 currently being treated in local hospitals. The derailment happened as the train negotiated a sharp turn near the town of Nizanda. The Mexican Attorney General has initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the incident.
President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico expressed her dismay over the incident, indicating that five of the injured individuals are in critical condition. She advised that high-ranking officials, including the Secretary of the Navy, are en route to the site to manage the ongoing rescue efforts.
Images and videos from the site depict rescue teams assisting passengers in evacuating the train, which was partially toppled off the tracks and precariously positioned near a cliff. The Interoceanic train involved comprises two locomotives and four passenger cars, functioning to connect the Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast. This route is vital for both passenger travel and freight movement within the region.
Oaxaca's Governor, Salomón Jara Cruz, expressed his profound regret regarding the incident, confirming that both state and federal agencies are collaborating to extend support and assistance to affected victims and their families in this challenging time.
Launched two years prior, the Interoceanic rail line forms part of a governmental push to enhance economic opportunities and improve infrastructure across southern Mexico. The initiative aims to modernize transport through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, establishing a pivotal trade route with expanded ports, railways, and industrial sites.
This rail corridor is integral to the Mexican government’s strategy for economic growth by improving connectivity between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Despite this tragic incident, authorities reaffirm their commitment to developing this essential transport line to bolster the region’s future prosperity. Rescue operations and inquiries continue as officials endeavor to assist those affected while investigating the factors contributing to the derailment.
