A strong tremor shook northern Kyrgyzstan early Monday, rattling homes and sending shockwaves across parts of Central Asia. The earthquake struck at 01:58 am IST (20:28 UTC Sunday), registering a magnitude of 5.4 at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The epicentre was located about 45 kilometres northeast of Kanysh-Kyya, in the rugged Tien Shan mountain range, a region known for frequent seismic activity. Earlier reports briefly pegged the quake at 5.7 magnitude, though this was later revised.

Residents in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and nearby regions reported feeling the tremors, though authorities have yet to confirm any significant structural damage or casualties. Emergency services are monitoring the situation closely.

Seismic Hotspot in Central Asia

The Tien Shan mountains, stretching across Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and western China, sit in one of Central Asia’s most earthquake-prone zones. The collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates causes frequent moderate tremors, often ranging from magnitude 4 to 6.

Local communities are familiar with such quakes, but shallow tremors like Monday’s can be particularly noticeable, shaking buildings and rattling nerves even without causing serious destruction.
