Firefly Aerospace Acquires SciTec in $855M Space-Tech Deal

In a bold move to expand its foothold in the defense and space technology sector, Firefly Aerospace announced its acquisition of national security tech company SciTec for approximately $855 million. The deal comes just months after Firefly’s landmark Nasdaq listing, marking a strategic pivot toward integrating defense software capabilities.

The acquisition will be funded through a mix of $300 million in cash and $555 million in Firefly shares, with the transaction expected to close by year-end. The Texas-based space tech firm recently achieved a valuation of $9.84 billion, following a 55.6% surge in its Nasdaq debut—the largest U.S. space-tech IPO this year.

SciTec, headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, brings advanced capabilities in missile warning, tracking, defense, intelligence, and surveillance. Integrating these systems with Firefly’s existing launch, lunar, and in-space services is expected to create a robust portfolio of military and commercial space solutions. Once the deal is finalized, SciTec will operate as a Firefly unit under its current CEO, Jim Lisowski.

This acquisition arrives amid rising geopolitical tensions, increased investor interest in defense programs, and a growing focus on space-based military technology. For Firefly, the deal not only strengthens its technological edge but also positions it to benefit from the expanding defense-space market.

Despite a turbulent past—including a bankruptcy in 2017, CEO turnover, and recent Alpha rocket testing mishaps—Firefly continues to push forward, signaling resilience and ambition in the competitive space tech industry.
