Clashes have been reported between North Korean troops and Ukrainian forces in the Russian Kursk region. The North Korean forces were reportedly fighting alongside Russia’s 810th Separate Naval Infantry Brigade. According to Ukrainian officials, the engagement was limited and likely aimed at probing Ukrainian defense lines for weaknesses. The fighting is said to have been part of ongoing military activities in the region, which has seen increasing tensions.

Sources confirmed that the North Korean troops are among a larger contingent of military personnel sent to Russia’s Kursk region, with at least 10,000 North Korean soldiers deployed. However, there is no independent verification of their involvement in direct combat, though Ukrainian officials confirmed the first engagement between their troops and North Korean forces.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov described the confrontation as the first known clash with North Korean troops, which signifies a new development in the ongoing conflict. The fighting reportedly resulted in the deaths of a significant number of North Korean soldiers, although specific details about the timing of the engagement remain unclear.

This incident follows Ukraine’s offensive in the Kursk region, which began in August, where Ukrainian forces made inroads into several Russian settlements along the border. This marked the first incursion onto Russian soil since the invasion by Russia began in 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern over the escalation, stating that this new phase of fighting with North Korean troops reflects growing instability in the world.

The Pentagon has yet to provide further details on the reported clashes, and while Ukrainian and U.S. officials have confirmed the presence of North Korean troops, additional clarifications on the nature of the fighting are still awaited. The ongoing conflict in the Kursk region continues to complicate an already volatile situation, as the international community watches closely.
