In London, Nigel Farage, leader of Britain's Reform UK party, faced a disruption during a speech on Saturday when a large banner featuring Russian President Vladimir Putin descended from the ceiling at an election rally in the Columbine Centre, Walton on the Naze, southeast England. The campaign group Led By Donkeys claimed responsibility for the stunt, sharing a video of the banner unveiling on X.
The banner prominently displayed Putin giving a thumbs-up with the words "I Nigel," a reference to Farage's recent statement where he expressed admiration for Putin and criticized the West for provoking Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Farage's remarks, made in an interview with the BBC, sparked significant backlash across the British political spectrum ahead of the July 4 national election, where Reform UK is expected to garner substantial votes.

Upon seeing the banner, Farage reacted by questioning who had put it up and called for someone at the venue to be dismissed. The audience responded by chanting for the banner to be removed. Reuters has reached out to Reform UK for comment on the incident.
Farage, a candidate for Member of Parliament in Clacton-on-Sea, located near Walton on the Naze, is known for his outspoken views on Brexit and immigration. The incident comes shortly after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned a racial slur made by a Reform UK supporter about him, underscoring heightened tensions ahead of the upcoming elections.
The episode at the rally underscores the contentious political climate in Britain, with Farage's party facing both support and criticism amid ongoing debates over foreign policy and domestic issues.
