In the fast-paced lifestyle of the UAE — especially in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi — people from all over the world come here with big dreams. Some are chasing career success, others are building a better life for their families, and a few are trying to turn lifelong passions into reality. But amidst ambition and responsibility, one question quietly lingers: what happens to the dreams we leave behind?
We’ve all taken detours from what we once dreamed of becoming and where life has taken us. A lucky few manage to align passion with profession — but for most, reality takes the wheel. Yet despite all this, it’s our dreams that keep our hope alive.
As children, we dreamed freely. But as we grow older and step out of the protective bubble of family and fantasy, we begin to realize that life is not always fair or easy. Society teaches us to be practical: get a degree, land a job, build a family, and retire. Creative passions like painting, writing, singing, or traveling are often labeled “hobbies,” especially if they don’t guarantee financial success. Many of us were told to choose stability over passion.
From personal experience, I can say — dreams never really disappear. They live on inside us, quietly or loudly, whispering what could have been. Even those who appear successful may feel a void. That longing, that restlessness, that “what if”— it all stems from an unfulfilled dream.
1. The Inheritance Dreamer
This dreamer tries to fulfill their old passions through their children — unknowingly passing down pressure and guilt rather than encouragement.
2. The Extremist Dreamer
They wait for the “perfect” time — after marriage, career, or retirement — and may eventually drop everything to chase their dream. This can lead to life-altering decisions, often impacting others.
3. The Coward Dreamer
They stop talking about their dreams altogether. Surrounded by unsupportive people, they slowly begin to believe their passions are unrealistic.
4. The Persistent, Stubborn Dreamer
Fueled by unstoppable energy, they never give up. If their passion is skill-based, they often succeed. But talent-based dreams require more than hard work — they need time, resilience, and sometimes, luck.
5. The Rational Dreamer
My favorite kind. These dreamers accept the demands of real life but keep their passion alive in parallel. They work 9-to-5, raise families, pay bills — but still paint, write, sing, or build on weekends. They may not be famous, but they are fulfilled.
In the UAE, where opportunities meet diversity, people often find themselves caught between ambition and personal dreams. The country’s progressive environment encourages innovation and self-expression, but it also demands discipline and practicality. In such a setting, becoming a Rational Dreamer is not just wise — it’s powerful.
The UAE offers platforms for side hustles, creative pursuits, and passion projects. From open mic nights to weekend art markets, from fitness communities to startup incubators — the space exists. All you need is the courage to take the first small step.
I don’t believe that every passion has to become a full-time profession. But I deeply believe that every passion deserves space in your life. It feeds the soul, brings peace, and helps us live without regret.
Be patient. Be persistent. You didn’t receive your passion by accident — it exists for a reason. Whether it’s small or big, quiet or loud — your dream matters.
Sometimes, taking one step back helps you leap a hundred steps ahead. The smart choice is not to abandon your dreams — but to nurture them.
Many late-blooming dreams have changed lives. Yours might be next.
Trust your instinct. Follow your heart — as long as it doesn’t hurt those around you.
Never lose your passion to dream — and never dream without passion.
