In a recent interview, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his aspiration for Israel to be self-sufficient in its defense needs by halting military support from the United States within the next ten years. This vision underscores Israel's advancing economic and military capabilities.
For decades, the United States has been a staunch ally of Israel, facilitating military agreements and the delivery of military gear worth hundreds of millions to assist in their ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Such defense collaboration remains vital to their strategic alliance.
Netanyahu acknowledged Israel's gratitude for the historical military support from Washington, yet he emphasized that the nation has progressed to a point where it possesses sophisticated military technologies and a solid economy to fulfill its defense requirements independently.
With an economy on a fast track to nearing one trillion dollars in the upcoming decade, Netanyahu asserted that Israel can start reducing its reliance on American military aid and phase it out gradually.
Currently, under a defense deal established in 2016, Israel receives approximately $3.8 billion annually from the United States, dedicated to military procurement. This agreement began in 2019 and is set to last until 2028.
Research indicates that since its inception in 1948, Israel has acquired over $300 billion in military and economic assistance from the US, making it a leading recipient of American aid on an inflation-adjusted basis.
Earlier this year, amid strained relations with US President Donald Trump, Netanyahu suggested a need for Israel to eventually "wean itself off" support from the US, although specifics on the timeline were not disclosed.
In a controversial September speech, he mentioned Israel's increasing global isolation, proposing a shift towards a "super-Sparta" approach. Following backlash, he clarified that his remarks focused on enhancing Israel’s defense sector and self-sufficiency to prevent supply chain disruptions.
Netanyahu's statements indicate a transformative change in Israel's defense strategy, aimed at fostering independence while retaining strong diplomatic and security relations with allied nations.
