Eastern Nepal is grappling with a severe weather disaster as heavy rains since Friday night (October 3, 2025) have triggered landslides, floods, and accidents, claiming at least 51 lives by Sunday morning, authorities reported.

Ilam district in Koshi province has been the worst hit, with 37 fatalities across multiple municipalities. Deumai and Maijogmai alone reported eight deaths each, while Ilam municipality and Sandakpur rural municipality saw six each. Suryodaya municipality accounted for five, Mangsebung three, and Fakfokthum village reported one casualty.

In southern Nepal, Udayapur and Panchathar faced deadly floods and landslides that killed three people. Lightning strikes claimed five more lives—three in Rautahat and two in Khotang. Road damage in Panchthar caused a fatal accident that took six more lives.

Authorities also reported missing persons. Four trekkers in the Langtang Conservation Area of Rasuwa district were swept away by swollen rivers, while individuals went missing in Ilam, Bara, and Kathmandu. Rescue operations by Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force continue in affected regions. Helicopters evacuated four people, including a pregnant woman, to safety in Dharan municipality.

The monsoon has intensified in five of Nepal’s seven provinces: Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini. Kathmandu Valley experienced slightly lighter rainfall on Sunday, allowing authorities to reopen some national highways for emergency and essential travel. However, night-time travel remains restricted on risky routes.

Domestic air travel has also been disrupted. Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) suspended flights from Kathmandu and other regional airports including Bharatpur, Janakpur, Bhadrapur, Pokhara, and Tumlingtar until conditions improve.

India offered support, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing solidarity on social media, reaffirming India’s readiness to assist Nepal in this challenging time.

As Nepal continues to battle the aftermath of the downpour, the focus remains on rescue operations, road clearance, and ensuring safety for residents in landslide-prone areas.
