Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the most important and holy months for Muslims across the globe. It holds a special place in the hearts of both Sunni and Shia Muslims, though their ways of observing it may differ. In 2025, Muharram began on Friday, June 27, and the most sacred day of the month, Ashura (10th Muharram), will be observed on Sunday, July 6, based on the moon sighting in India on June 26.
Understanding the Islamic Calendar and Muharram’s Timing
The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, which means that months begin and end based on the sighting of the moon. Each month lasts about 29 or 30 days. As a result, Islamic months move back by about 10 to 11 days every year on the Gregorian calendar (January to December system).
Muharram is the first month of this calendar and marks the start of the Hijri New Year. “Hijri” refers to the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Madinah — a key event that marks the beginning of the Islamic era.
Why Is Muharram So Sacred?
Among the four sacred months in Islam — Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab — Muharram is especially important because of the tragic and historical Battle of Karbala that occurred on 10th Muharram (Ashura) in the year 680 AD (61 AH in the Islamic calendar).
This is the day when Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was killed along with his family and companions by the army of Yazid, the then ruler of the Islamic empire. The battle took place in Karbala, which is now located in Iraq.
Imam Hussain refused to support Yazid because he believed Yazid was unjust, corrupt, and unfit to lead the Muslim community. Imam Hussain’s stand for justice, truth, and righteousness, even when he knew he would be killed, became one of the greatest examples of moral courage in Islamic history.
What Happened in the Battle of Karbala?
Imam Hussain, with around 72 family members and followers, was surrounded by Yazid’s army of thousands in the hot desert plains of Karbala. They were denied water for days, and on the 10th day of Muharram — Ashura — the battle broke out.
Imam Hussain, along with his young son, relatives, and supporters, was killed brutally, and the surviving women and children from his camp were taken captive.
This battle is not only remembered for its violence and sorrow, but more for the message of standing up against tyranny and never bowing down to injustice, even in the face of death.
How Do Shia Muslims Observe Muharram and Ashura?
For Shia Muslims, Muharram is a month of deep mourning. The first ten days are spent in majlis (religious gatherings) where people listen to the story of Karbala, learn about Imam Hussain’s bravery, and reflect on the lessons of sacrifice, honesty, and justice.
On the 10th day, Ashura, Shia Muslims:
Some groups also perform self-flagellation or chest-beating (matam) as a way to express sorrow. However, not all Shia groups practice this.
At the end of Ashura, the Tazias are taken to rivers or cemeteries and are buried or immersed, symbolizing the final farewell to Imam Hussain’s memory until next year.
How Do Sunni Muslims Observe Ashura?
Though Sunni Muslims do not mourn in the same way, they also honor the day of Ashura. It is believed that on this day:
Sunni Muslims:
Tazia: A Cultural and Artistic Symbol
One of the most visible symbols of Ashura in India, Pakistan, and parts of the Middle East is the Tazia. These are models of Imam Hussain’s tomb, made by artisans using bamboo, paper, cloth, mirrors, and colored foil.
Many families prepare Tazias at home, keep them lit with lights at night, and invite neighbors to visit and offer prayers. In rural towns and large cities, entire communities come together to create massive Tazias, some reaching several meters high.
The procession of the Tazia is both an emotional and respectful act — symbolizing a funeral march — and ends with the burial of the Tazia in fields, rivers, or special grounds.
The Global Significance of Muharram
While India and the Middle East are the most visibly active during Muharram, it is observed with deep respect in many countries including:
Modern-Day Lessons from Muharram
Imam Hussain’s stand at Karbala is more than just a historical story — it’s a lesson in courage, resistance, and moral strength. Even today, millions of people draw inspiration from his life.
Final Words
Muharram 2025 and Ashura on July 6 are not only days of mourning but also of learning, reflection, and renewal of values. Whether through fasting, prayer, processions, or acts of kindness, Muslims worldwide remember Imam Hussain’s sacrifice and strive to live a life of honesty, justice, and peace.
This month serves as a powerful reminder that truth never dies, and the message of Karbala continues to inspire people across generations and religions.
