Emerging American tennis sensation Michael Zheng is making waves at the Australian Open but now confronts a significant challenge regarding his prize earnings. The 21-year-old collegiate player surprised fans by defeating former quarter-finalist Sebastian Korda in a nail-biting five-set first-round match.
Zheng's stellar performance in Melbourne Park has secured him a minimum of A$225,000 (around US$150,000), which could rise to A$327,750 if he wins his next face-off against the 32nd seed, Corentin Moutet.
However, due to stringent US college tennis regulations, Zheng risks having to return a majority of his prize winnings. These guidelines limit collegiate athletes to retaining only US$10,000 in prize money annually to maintain their amateur status.
Currently in his senior year at Columbia University, where he studies psychology, Zheng stated, “I have one more semester left at school, which I definitely plan to finish. After the tournament, I’ll be going back to my studies.”
He also indicated he plans to discuss the prize money predicament with his coach, saying, “I’ve heard that since it’s my senior spring, there might be a chance to keep some of it, but I want to be sure before accepting anything. I don’t want to get in any trouble.”
This scenario underscores the difficult tightrope many gifted college athletes walk, balancing high-stakes competition with their education. For now, Zheng remains fixated on his matches while striving to maintain his academic commitments.
