Meta Can Use EU Facebook and Instagram Posts to Train AI

Meta, the U.S. tech company that owns Facebook and Instagram, is now allowed to use public posts from adults in Germany and other countries in the European Union (EU) to train its artificial intelligence (AI) tool, Meta AI. This is happening because the deadline for users to say “no” to this ended on Tuesday.

Meta has said it will look at all public posts made by adult users across the EU to help make its AI better. This means any photo, video, or comment that is shared publicly on Facebook and Instagram could be used by the company—unless the user clearly told Meta they didn’t want their posts used.

Some people tried to stop Meta from doing this. In Germany, a consumer rights group from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia went to court. They said Meta was breaking EU privacy laws by using people’s posts in this way. But on Friday, the court decided that Meta was not doing anything wrong. The judges said Meta’s plan had a real purpose and that there was no easier or less private way to do what Meta wanted. The court also mentioned that Meta promised not to use private or sensitive information like people’s names, phone numbers, or account details.

Messages on WhatsApp will not be used because they are protected with special security (encryption). But if someone chats with Meta’s AI assistant, those messages are not private and may also be used to train the AI.

In simple words, Meta now has permission to learn from public Facebook and Instagram posts in Europe—unless users chose to opt out before the deadline.
