As Americans tighten their belts, wallet-friendly restaurant chains are emerging as the clear winners on the dining scene. McDonald’s, Chili’s, and Domino’s are drawing in more customers looking for cheaper, filling meals — a trend reshaping the food industry’s balance of power.
The shift is proving tough for higher-priced fast-casual brands like Chipotle, Cava, and Sweetgreen, which are struggling to keep younger diners coming back. For many in the 25 to 35 age group, once loyal to these “premium” quick eats, a mix of inflation, student loan repayments, and slower wage growth is forcing a rethink of where to spend on food.
Data from consulting firm Revenue Management Solutions shows that restaurant visits dropped across the board in the third quarter of 2025 — from low-cost takeout joints to full-service dining. But the decline hit fast-casual chains hardest, as diners traded down to cheaper, quicker options.
At McDonald’s, steady value menus and convenience through drive-thrus are paying off. Chili’s, meanwhile, is successfully marketing itself as “better than fast food,” luring lower-income families with deals like its $10.99 burger and shareable Triple Dipper appetizers.
Burger King is also seeing a boost, thanks to popular offers such as the “2 for $5” and “3 for $7” meal combos that appeal to budget-conscious customers. Domino’s, leveraging its massive delivery network and operational scale, continues to attract pizza lovers with consistent value without slashing profits.
Behind the scenes, rising costs are squeezing margins industry-wide. Beef prices, worsened by new tariffs, are hitting menus across the board — from McDonald’s burgers to Chipotle’s burritos. Still, quick-service chains appear better positioned to weather the storm, helped by lower labor costs and efficient operations.
As U.S. households continue to stretch every dollar, the dining divide between affordable and upscale is only getting wider. For now, the drive-thru window seems to be winning.
