MAYDAY at 625 ft: How Captain Sabharwal Saved Lives in His Last MomentsOn the morning of July 4, 2025, Flight AI171, operated by Air India, took off from Ahmedabad airport headed for Dubai. Just seconds after takeoff, disaster struck. Both engines reportedly lost power, leaving the aircraft in a deadly glide with little altitude to spare. In those final moments—just 625 feet above ground—Captain Sumeet Sabharwal made a call that would define his legacy.
"MAYDAY, MAYDAY"—his calm voice to air traffic control carried no panic, only precision. And in less than 30 seconds, the pilot steered the aircraft away from densely populated buildings, saving dozens of lives on the ground.
Captain Sabharwal, 44, was a veteran pilot with over 20 years of flying experience. Born and raised in Mumbai, he was known among colleagues as soft-spoken, methodical, and deeply committed to aviation.
A father, son, and mentor to many, Sabharwal had recently chosen to retire early to care for his aging father. Friends say he had planned to move to Singapore to live with his son after his final few flights with Air India.
According to preliminary reports from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), both engines of the Airbus A320neo failed shortly after takeoff. Captain Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder had fewer than 20 seconds to respond.
Eyewitnesses recall the plane banking away from residential buildings and toward a clearing—a decision that likely prevented a greater catastrophe. The aircraft ultimately impacted a construction site near Naroda, killing both pilots but sparing all 121 passengers and dozens on the ground.
What makes Sabharwal's final moments extraordinary is the altitude: at 625 feet, most pilots have fewer than 10 seconds to act. Aviation experts agree that the margin for error is razor-thin.
"The fact that he issued a MAYDAY, assessed his surroundings, and changed course at that altitude speaks volumes of his training and instinct," said aviation analyst Rohit Mehta.
Residents of the area credit him with saving their lives. "We felt the building tremble. We later realized he veered away to protect us," said Geeta Patni, a local resident.
Air India staff, aviation peers, and political leaders paid tribute to Captain Sabharwal’s courage. In a statement, Air India wrote:
“Captain Sabharwal’s quick thinking and selfless action prevented a far greater tragedy. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
A memorial service held in Mumbai was attended by over 600 people, including passengers from the flight and their families.
In an era of increasing focus on aviation safety, Sabharwal’s story is a reminder of the human element behind every flight. Technology matters—but at the heart of every rescue is decision-making, training, and bravery.
The aviation community has called for a posthumous national honor to recognize his act. Social media has echoed the demand, with hashtags like #CaptainSabharwal, #AI171Hero, and #SilentPilot trending across India.
In just a few seconds, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal made a choice that saved hundreds. He did not live to see the impact of his decision—but for the families who returned home that day, his name will forever be synonymous with quiet heroism.
