Abu Dhabi — The UAE is taking a big step toward the future by planning to send a data center into space. A new UAE startup called Madari Space, led by former Etihad pilot Shareef Al Romaithi, will launch the world’s first space-based data center into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by the third quarter of 2026.
This exciting idea could change how the world handles data from satellites. Right now, most satellite data is sent back to Earth for processing. But Madari Space wants to process this data directly in space, which means faster results and real-time decisions.
Madari Space will launch the data center into Low Earth Orbit, which is a safe area close to Earth where many satellites operate. This orbit is perfect for tests and early projects.
In the beginning, Madari will test how well the data center works in space. If it is successful, they want to expand later into the “cislunar” region—that is the area between Earth and the Moon. This shows the UAE’s big dream of becoming a leader in space and digital technology.
Satellites around Earth collect a huge amount of data every day. This data is used for things like weather forecasts, tracking storms, watching crops, and even avoiding crashes between satellites.
Usually, this raw data has to be sent down to Earth to be cleaned, sorted, and processed in large computer systems. This takes time. But if the data can be handled right there in space, decisions can be made much faster.
Shareef Al Romaithi, the CEO of Madari Space, said,
“By placing data centers in space, we help data owners make better and faster decisions.”
There are two big reasons this project is possible now:
Lower launch costs – It is now cheaper than before to send things into space.
Better technology – New machines and systems are lighter and more powerful.
These improvements make it possible for a small company like Madari Space to dream big.
Madari Space is getting help from the Mohammed bin Rashid Innovation Fund. It is also working inside one of the UAE’s space economic zones. That means the company gets access to:
Special permits
High-tech labs
Accelerator programs to grow faster
Madari’s main customers will be:
Satellite companies
Government departments
Large companies
These groups can use Madari’s space data centers to make quick decisions, especially in important areas like satellite safety and data storage.
This is not just about one company. The UAE is quickly becoming a hub for data and digital power.
The country is already home to big tech names like Khazna, and a new project called UAE Stargate is being built in Abu Dhabi. Supported by American tech giants like Nvidia, Cisco, Oracle, and OpenAI, this project will make a strong AI data center in the UAE.
Nvidia will supply its new Blackwell GB300 systems for the UAE Stargate, showing how the UAE is working closely with US tech efforts.
Another big UAE tech company, G42, is also helping to grow this digital future. G42 is investing in AI projects not just in the UAE but in Asia, Africa, and the United States. These efforts are backed by strong financial support from the UAE’s oil wealth.
If successful, Madari Space’s mission will make history. It would be the first-ever data center in space, helping the world process satellite data faster and smarter.
This project shows how the UAE is not only looking up at the stars but also taking action to lead the world in space and technology.
As the world watches, the UAE proves once again that it’s ready to think big, act fast, and shape the future.
