American actor Lucy Liu, renowned for roles in Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill, Lucky Number Slevin, and Elementary, is stepping into her first major dramatic leading role with Rosemead. Despite nearly 30 years in Hollywood, Liu recently realized how few dramatic opportunities she had received.
Liu expressed surprise at finally securing a leading dramatic role. “I just haven’t had any opportunities to tap into it. To think I’ve been in this business for over 30 years and now have the first leading role like this—it’s kind of crazy," she said.
She also addressed the stereotypes and biases she has faced throughout her career. She reflected on criticism for allegedly perpetuating the “Dragon Lady” trope in Kill Bill (2003), questioning why similar scrutiny does not apply to other actors.
Appearance-driven assumptions have also limited her opportunities. “I cannot turn myself into somebody who looks Caucasian, but if I could, I would’ve had so many more opportunities," she explained.
Despite the industry’s shortcomings, Liu’s passion for storytelling remains strong. “There’s so much broken in the system, but it doesn’t have to change your belief in the magic of filmmaking," she shared, adding that her early momentum in Hollywood fueled her ongoing enthusiasm.
In Rosemead, Liu plays Irene, a Chinese immigrant navigating her son’s mental health challenges. Adapted from a 2017 article, the film marks Liu’s debut as both lead actor and producer. It premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 6 and will release in the United States on December 5.
