As 2026 approaches, many people look to start the new year with healthier habits, but often overlook the power of small, daily routines. Dr Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford with 25 years of experience, has shared eight simple habits that can enhance overall health and wellbeing before the new year begins. His tips focus on supporting digestion, boosting energy, and creating a balanced lifestyle.

Dr Sethi advises starting the day with a moment of gratitude instead of immediately picking up your phone. He explains that cortisol, the stress hormone, peaks in the morning, and scrolling through messages or social media can increase stress. Practicing gratitude activates the vagus nerve, helping steady digestion and set a calm tone for the day. He also recommends avoiding taking your phone to the bathroom, which can further disrupt your morning routine.

Another key habit Dr Sethi suggests is getting morning sunlight. Exposure to natural light in the early hours helps regulate your circadian rhythm, improves mood, and can enhance sleep quality. Post-meal walks are also recommended to aid digestion and prevent bloating, heartburn, and sluggishness. A short 10-minute walk after eating helps food move smoothly through the digestive system and supports overall gut health.

Dr Sethi also emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated, as water supports digestion, circulation, and detoxification. Consuming water at regular intervals throughout the day is more effective than drinking large amounts at once. Additionally, he highlights mindful eating as a habit that can improve both digestion and overall nutrition. Paying attention to your food, eating slowly, and avoiding distractions like screens can reduce overeating and promote a healthier relationship with meals.

Regular physical activity is another habit Dr Sethi encourages, as it supports not only the body but also mental wellbeing. Simple exercises such as stretching, yoga, or a short workout routine can be enough to keep the body active and improve circulation. Managing stress through meditation, deep breathing, or relaxation exercises is also vital, as chronic stress can harm both the gut and overall health.

Finally, Dr Sethi underlines the importance of sleep. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and getting enough rest each night helps the body repair itself, regulates hormones, and supports cognitive and digestive health. Together, these eight habits provide a strong foundation for improved energy, better digestion, and long-term wellbeing as people step into 2026.

By adopting these small but consistent routines, individuals can enhance their health without feeling overwhelmed, setting themselves up for a year of balanced physical and mental wellness.
