England’s cricket team is gearing up to face Australia in the first Test of the Ashes series, starting Friday in Perth. Head coach Brendon McCullum said reclaiming the Ashes on Australian soil would be a defining moment for the team. Since taking charge in 2022, McCullum, along with skipper Ben Stokes, has implemented an aggressive style of play known as “Bazball.” This approach focuses on attacking batting and bold strategies, aimed at putting pressure on opponents.
However, England adopted a slightly more pragmatic approach during their home Test series against India earlier this year, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Despite this, McCullum emphasised that the Ashes remains the ultimate test for his team. Historically, England has struggled in Australia, having won only three series in the last 50 years. The last series victory was in 2010-11, and they have not won a single Test match in Australia since then.
“This team has been together for a good couple of years, and we have been building towards this moment,” McCullum told the BBC. “It is the biggest stage and the brightest lights. It is a series that could define teams, the people and players within it.” The coach highlighted that the team is ready to face Australia even with the absence of key Australian players, including captain Pat Cummins and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, who are missing the first Test due to injuries.
England has included pace bowler Mark Wood in the 12-man squad for the opening Test. Wood returns to Test cricket for the first time since August 2024, adding strength to the bowling attack. McCullum expressed confidence in his squad, stating, “We’ve got our team to the start line. I feel like our horse is going to run well. Whether we find another horse in the race that is better than us, who knows.”
The Ashes series is not only a competition but a platform to define teams and players, McCullum added. England aims to combine their aggressive style with strategic play to overcome Australia on home soil. With preparation complete and key players returning, England hopes to challenge the top-ranked Australians and start the series on a strong note. The first Test in Perth will set the tone for the rest of the series, and all eyes will be on England’s performance under McCullum’s leadership.
