Russian President Vladimir Putin does not personally use artificial intelligence (AI) tools, the Kremlin confirmed on Thursday. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that while Putin himself avoids using AI, some officials working under him do rely on the technology.
Peskov added that AI tools were recently used to help organize and sort through questions from citizens during President Putin’s annual question-and-answer session. This event allows the public to directly ask the president about national and international issues.
The announcement comes shortly after President Putin called for the creation of a national task force to coordinate Russia’s work on developing domestic AI systems. He emphasized that homegrown generative AI models are essential for maintaining Russia’s technological sovereignty and reducing reliance on foreign technology.
The Kremlin’s statement clarifies the president’s personal stance on AI while showing that Russian authorities are increasingly incorporating AI into administrative and public communication processes. This move reflects Russia’s growing interest in AI technology, especially in areas like government services, information management, and national security.
By distinguishing between his personal use and the broader adoption by government staff, Putin signals cautious engagement with AI while supporting national initiatives to strengthen Russia’s technological independence.
