The streets of Los Angeles turned tense on Sunday as people protested against federal immigration raids. Many demonstrators set cars on fire and clashed with security forces near government buildings. To control the growing unrest, U.S. President Donald Trump sent National Guard troops into the city—even though California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly disagreed with this move and called it illegal.
President Trump also made a big announcement: he ordered that masks not be allowed at any protests. He posted on his social media platform Social Truth, saying:
"ARREST THE PEOPLE IN FACE MASKS, NOW."
He believes people are using masks to hide their identities while causing trouble. But many protesters say they wear masks to protect themselves from smoke, fireworks, and tear gas during demonstrations.

This protest movement started after immigration raids were carried out on Friday in Los Angeles, a city with a large Latino population. People gathered in big numbers, upset about the government's aggressive actions. Some protests turned violent—rocks and bottles were thrown at the police, and self-driving Waymo cars were set on fire.
The police called several rallies "unlawful" and began arresting people. Officers on horseback were sent out to control the crowds, while videos online showed the chaos unfolding in the city.
Meanwhile, California Governor Newsom criticized President Trump’s response. He said that Trump’s threat to send in Marines made the situation worse. The Governor posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Los Angeles: Remain peaceful. Don’t fall into the trap that extremists are hoping for.”
He also said that the local police were already handling the protests and that the extra military force was unnecessary.
While Trump praised the National Guard for their efforts, there is still confusion about whether he has the full authority to ban masks at protests or deploy troops without the state’s permission.
This ongoing situation has sparked a lot of debate about rights, safety, and how the country should handle immigration and protests.
