9 Injured in Massive 20-Vehicle Pile-Up in Fujairah Triggered by Car Fire

On Wednesday evening, a serious 20-vehicle pile-up happened on the mountainous Fujairah-Dibba Al-Fujairah road, between Waeeb Al-Hinna and Dibba town. The crash caused the road to close completely, which disrupted traffic significantly. The incident involved a mix of 16 cars and 4 trucks. Authorities say it was a chain-reaction collision triggered by one vehicle catching fire, leading to sudden braking across the convoy.

Emergency crews from Dibba Al-Fujairah Police, the Traffic and Patrol Department, Masafi Police, and National Ambulance quickly responded to the scene. Out of nine people injured, eight had minor injuries and were treated with basic first aid before being discharged. One person was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Initial findings suggest the worst collision occurred when a speeding truck failed to slow down, crashing into slower-moving cars. Police are investigating driver behavior and road conditions. They stress that drivers need to keep safe following distances, stick to speed limits, and be extra cautious in mountainous areas.

The highway was closed for several hours, causing a heavy traffic backlog. Authorities cleared the scene by diverting vehicles and reopening the road by late evening. The Fujairah Police General Command reiterated its commitment to improving roadway safety and reducing such incidents. They urged all drivers to stay alert and follow traffic rules.

Road safety is a growing concern across the UAE National statistics from 2024 showed an 8% increase in traffic accidents compared to the previous year, resulting in 384 road fatalities, up from 352 in 2023. Authorities are taking stronger action, including stricter enforcement, awareness campaigns, and improved vehicle safety protocols to reduce these numbers.

This Fujairah pile-up highlights the ongoing risk of chain-reaction crashes, particularly with heavy vehicles on elevated or winding roads. The quick actions of emergency services and the fast reopening of the highway helped prevent more serious injuries. However, police are expected to take further action against any drivers found at fault.
