A family trip meant for celebration ended in tragedy as five Keralites, including an engineer based in Doha, Qatar, were killed in a road accident in Kenya on Sunday. The family had traveled to East Africa to celebrate Eid and enjoy a holiday together.
The accident took place near the popular tourist route of Maai Mahiu, which connects Nairobi to several safari destinations. Reports from local police say the vehicle carrying the victims collided with a truck, resulting in an instant and devastating crash.
The victims have been identified as:
Niyas Abdul Salam, a mechanical engineer working in Doha
His wife, Rinsha Niyas
Their daughter, Ilma, aged 4
Rinsha’s brother, Rishad, a student
A family friend, Rizwana, also from Kerala
They were part of a larger group touring Kenya, but the car they were traveling in got separated and met with the accident while heading toward a wildlife safari park.
Family members back in Kerala, especially in the Malappuram district, are heartbroken. What was meant to be a joyful Eid vacation quickly turned into a nightmare. The local community in Doha and Indian expat groups in Kenya are working closely with Indian embassy officials to ensure the bodies are brought back to India.
The Indian High Commission in Nairobi has confirmed the incident and is actively coordinating with Kenyan authorities for the repatriation of the bodies. Embassy officials also visited the accident site and expressed condolences to the affected families.
The Kerala Chief Minister’s Office has also been in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs, requesting urgent assistance in speeding up the formalities.

Messages of condolence are pouring in from the global Malayali community. Indian expatriate groups in Qatar, Kenya, and the UAE have extended their support and are offering help to the grieving families.
Many people have taken to social media to express their shock and sadness. Friends describe Niyas as a kind-hearted man who was deeply devoted to his family.
One of his colleagues from Doha shared, “He had planned this trip for months. He was so excited to give his daughter her first safari experience.”
This tragedy has once again raised concerns about road safety in certain regions of Africa, where infrastructure and traffic control can be inconsistent. Indian tour operators are also urging travelers to be extra cautious when booking travel routes, especially in foreign countries.
