Countries would reject being asked to “enforce” peace in Gaza under the Trump ceasefire plan, Jordan’s King Abdullah has warned, raising concerns over the risk of foreign forces being drawn into ongoing conflict.
King Abdullah said that if the proposed Gaza mission under the Trump peace plan turns from “peacekeeping” to “peace enforcing,” no country would want to take part.
He explained that while Jordan and Egypt are ready to train Palestinian police, deploying armed troops inside Gaza would lead to chaos rather than stability. “Peacekeeping means supporting local Palestinian police, which we are willing to train in large numbers. But if we’re running around Gaza with weapons, that’s not something any nation would want to do,” the King said, highlighting the fragile nature of post-war Gaza.
The Trump ceasefire plan calls on Arab states and international partners to send stabilisation forces to Gaza. These forces would train Palestinian security personnel and coordinate with Jordan and Egypt. However, the idea has sparked apprehension across the Middle East, with many fearing it could turn into a prolonged military engagement.
King Abdullah made it clear that Jordan would not send troops into Gaza, citing his country’s close political and emotional connection to the Palestinian cause. Over half of Jordan’s population is of Palestinian descent, and the country has hosted over 2.3 million refugees. “We’re too close politically to get involved militarily,” he said, adding that Jordan would continue to support humanitarian and peace-building efforts instead.
The Jordanian royal also shared his emotional account of flying aid missions over Gaza, describing the devastation as “shocking” and “heartbreaking.” “Looking over the back ramp, the destruction was unimaginable. How the international community allows this to continue is mind-boggling,” he said.
Meanwhile, Queen Rania of Jordan—herself of Palestinian descent—praised President Trump for his diplomatic efforts to pressure Israel into a ceasefire. She criticised the world’s inaction, saying, “For two years, parents have watched their children suffer, starve, and live in terror, while the world watches in silence.”
The King and Queen’s remarks come as Gaza continues to face severe humanitarian crises despite the recent ceasefire. Over 68,000 people have reportedly been killed since Israel’s invasion, which followed Hamas’s deadly 7 October attack.
Both leaders expressed cautious optimism that lasting peace is still possible. “Choosing hope is hard, but it’s the only path that doesn’t betray our humanity,” Queen Rania said.
The Trump ceasefire agreement has already resulted in the release of hostages and prisoners from both sides, but experts warn that unless regional leaders address the underlying causes of the conflict, peace in Gaza will remain fragile and uncertain.
