In a rare public defense of his decision to withdraw political endorsements for The Washington Post, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and owner of the newspaper, published an op-ed on Monday advocating for the publication's neutrality in political matters. This marks his first commentary since the decision sparked significant backlash.
In the op-ed, Bezos asserted that ceasing political endorsements is the correct path for The Washington Post, positioning it as a move towards more independent and objective journalism. He emphasized that presidential endorsements do not sway undecided voters. “No undecided voters in Pennsylvania are going to say, ‘I’m going with Newspaper A’s endorsement,’” he wrote. “What presidential endorsements actually do is create a perception of bias. A perception of non-independence. Ending them is a principled decision, and it’s the right one.”
Despite this reasoning, the decision has stirred controversy within The Post, leading to dissent among its editorial board. Shortly after the op-ed's release, three editorial board members who were in favor of endorsements resigned. The backlash extended to the readership as well, with over 200,000 subscribers canceling their subscriptions in protest of the decision.

Bezos acknowledged in his piece that the timing of the announcement was "inadequate," but he refuted claims that it was a strategic move. “I wish we had made the change earlier than we did, in a moment further from the election and the emotions around it,” he explained.
The situation was further complicated by reports of a meeting between former President Donald Trump and executives from Blue Origin, Bezos's aerospace company. This meeting occurred shortly after The Post's announcement, leading to speculation that Bezos's decision was an attempt to gain favor with Trump ahead of the upcoming election.
However, Bezos denied these allegations, asserting that there was no communication between The Post and any political campaigns regarding the endorsement decision. “I would also like to be clear that no quid pro quo of any kind is at work here. Neither campaign nor candidate was consulted or informed at any level or in any way about this decision. It was made entirely internally,” he stated.
He further clarified that he had no prior knowledge of the meeting between Trump and Blue Origin executives, expressing his exasperation upon learning about it. “I sighed,” Bezos admitted, “because I knew it would provide ammunition to those who would like to frame this as anything other than a principled decision. But the fact is, I didn’t know about the meeting beforehand.”
Bezos acknowledged that his various interests—between Amazon, Blue Origin, and The Post—sometimes create an appearance of conflict. Nevertheless, he emphasized that while his wealth grants him significant power, it also acts as a safeguard against external pressures.
“While I do not and will not push my personal interest, I will also not allow this paper to stay on autopilot and fade into irrelevance,” Bezos concluded.
