Japan's space agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has been targeted by a series of cyberattacks since late last year, officials confirmed on Friday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi acknowledged the incidents, emphasizing that while there have been multiple cyber intrusions, sensitive information pertaining to rockets and satellites remained secure and unaffected. JAXA promptly responded to the attacks by shutting down compromised networks and conducting thorough investigations to ensure no classified operational data or national security information was compromised.
Hayashi reassured the public of Japan's commitment to enhancing cybersecurity measures in response to these incidents. The country has been ramping up its defense capabilities amid growing regional tensions, particularly in response to China's military advancements. However, experts suggest that Japan may still rely heavily on the United States for certain defense capabilities, such as long-range cruise missile technologies.

Officials stated that as of now, there have been no reported leaks of information resulting from the cyberattacks. Defense Minister Minoru Kihara confirmed that while JAXA's operations were affected, the Ministry of Defense itself remained unaffected. He underscored the importance of closely monitoring the ongoing investigation by JAXA, which is a critical contractor for the ministry.
Meanwhile, Education and Science Minister Masahito Moriyama echoed Hayashi's sentiments, expressing confidence that the cyberattacks had not caused any actual damage. Moriyama emphasized that JAXA is collaborating closely with the government's cybersecurity team to implement robust countermeasures against future threats.
The cyberattacks on JAXA highlight the persistent challenges posed by cybersecurity threats to critical infrastructure and sensitive government agencies. Japan's proactive response underscores its commitment to safeguarding national interests and technological advancements in the face of evolving cyber threats.
