Jerusalem: Israel's military Chief Herzi Halevi reported that approximately 900 militants have been killed in Rafah since the start of Israel's ground assault on the southern Gaza city in early May. Speaking during an inspection of a military logistics post in southern Gaza, Halevi noted that among the casualties were "at least one battalion commander, many company commanders, and numerous operatives," as stated by the Israel Defense Forces.
According to Xinhua news agency, Halevi indicated that the ongoing offensive in Rafah is projected to conclude within the coming weeks. He emphasized the current phase's focus on dismantling both above-ground and underground infrastructure, a process requiring time to ensure comprehensive destruction. Halevi underscored the strategic importance of disabling infrastructure to prevent its future use.
Prior to the ground offensive, Rafah served as a refuge for civilians seeking shelter from extensive Israeli airstrikes across Gaza. The military campaign aims not only to neutralize militant threats but also to dismantle their operational capabilities thoroughly.
The developments underscore ongoing tensions and military operations in Gaza, reflecting broader regional security concerns amid international calls for de-escalation and humanitarian efforts in the conflict-affected areas.
