Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin will arrive in China on Sunday, marking the first visit by an Irish leader to the country in 14 years. The trip comes at a time when China is actively reaching out to individual European Union members amid ongoing tensions with the EU bloc.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Martin’s visit will last five days. During his stay, he is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Zhao Leji, who leads the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. Along with meetings in Beijing, Martin will also travel to Shanghai.
The visit is being closely watched as Beijing looks to strengthen bilateral relationships with European countries, even as broader China-EU relations remain strained. In recent months, China has imposed provisional tariffs of up to 42.7% on dairy products imported from the EU, including milk and cheese. These measures followed EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and came alongside separate investigations into European brandy and pork imports.
Martin’s trip follows similar high-level visits by European leaders. In late 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron and Spain’s King Felipe VI traveled to China separately to hold talks with Xi, signaling Beijing’s focus on maintaining direct ties with key European capitals.
China is also hosting South Korean President Lee Jae Myung from Sunday for a four-day visit. His trip comes amid heightened tensions in East Asia, particularly around Taiwan. Japan’s leadership has recently warned of possible involvement if China takes action against the island, which Beijing considers its own territory. Just last week, China carried out large-scale military drills around Taiwan, describing them as a warning against separatist forces and foreign interference.
Ahead of his visit, South Korea’s president reiterated his country’s respect for the “One China” policy in an interview with Chinese state media, underscoring the sensitive regional backdrop against which these diplomatic engagements are taking place.
Together, these visits highlight a busy period of diplomacy for Beijing as it navigates trade disputes, regional security concerns, and its complex relationship with Europe.
