The police in New York are still looking for the person who shot and killed Brian Thompson, the insurance chief at UnitedHealth. He was shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel on December 5, 2024. The police have asked the public for help in finding the person responsible and are offering a $10,000 reward for any useful information.
The police released new photos of the suspect, who is still on the run. They also searched a youth hostel in Manhattan, where they found that the man had checked in using a fake New Jersey driver’s license. He had been staying there since November 30. However, the police didn’t find any new information about where the suspect might be, although they did get more pictures of him. A phone was found near the shooting, which is believed to belong to the suspect. The phone was a burner phone, which is often used to avoid being tracked.

Brian Thompson, who was 50 years old, was shot several times around 6:45 AM while he was arriving at the hotel for UnitedHealth’s investor day. Video footage showed that the shooter was waiting for Thompson and approached him from behind before shooting him. After the shooting, the suspect left on foot and then rode an electric bike towards Central Park.
Even though UnitedHealth had security inside the hotel for the event, there was no security outside where Thompson was shot. The company hasn’t said anything about the security at the time of the shooting. After the news broke, UnitedHealth’s stock price fell by 5.2%, which means the company lost more than $29 billion in market value.
The police found two bullet shell casings near where Thompson was shot. One of the shell casings had the words "delay" and "depose" written on it. These words are from a book called Delay, Deny, Defend, which talks about how some insurance companies try to avoid paying claims. The police are now wondering if the words could mean the shooter was angry about how insurance companies work. Joseph Giacalone, a former police sergeant, said that it’s strange to see words like this on a shell casing and that the meaning is not clear.
The police are using drones, dogs, and cameras to help find the suspect. They have also tried using facial recognition and DNA testing, but so far these methods haven’t given enough clues to help them catch the person who did this. They are continuing to search for the shooter.
At the same time, police in Minnesota are looking into fake bomb threats that were reported on the same night as the shooting. The threats were made at Brian Thompson’s home and also at the house where his wife lives. The police responded quickly, but no bombs were found. It seems that this was a prank, known as "swatting," which is when someone calls in fake emergencies to make police and emergency services respond.
The shooting has also caused a lot of discussion on social media. Some people have even shown support for the shooting, blaming UnitedHealth and other insurance companies for how they deny claims. Many people are frustrated with the insurance system in the U.S.
Brian Thompson was a well-known leader at UnitedHealth. He worked at the company for 20 years and was in charge of the UnitedHealthcare division, which is the largest health insurance company in the U.S. His death has left his family and coworkers heartbroken. The police are still trying to find out who did this and why. They are exploring all possibilities, but so far, the reason behind the shooting remains unclear.
