TIME Magazine has announced its highly anticipated ‘TIME100 Most Influential People in AI 2024’ list, highlighting the individuals driving the future of artificial intelligence. This year’s edition prominently features Indian-American figures who are making groundbreaking strides in the AI sector.

Among those recognized are Sundar Pichai, the forward-thinking CEO of Google and Alphabet; Satya Nadella, the transformative CEO of Microsoft; and Rohit Prasad, the Senior Vice President and head scientist of Artificial General Intelligence at Amazon. The list also includes other influential figures who are pushing the boundaries of AI technology.

Arati Prabhakar, the Director of the US Office of Science and Technology Policy, is also featured, underscoring the global impact of her work in the field.

TIME Magazine has categorized its top 100 list into four distinct groups: Leaders, Innovators, Shapers, and Thinkers. In their explanation of these categories, TIME noted the diverse range of individuals included, from 15-year-old Francesca Mani, who is advocating for protections against deepfakes across the US, to 77-year-old Andrew Yao, a leading Chinese computer scientist who has called for an international regulatory body for AI.

TIME observed that while the previous year saw a surge in AI startups like OpenAI and Anthropic, 2024 has shifted focus to the substantial influence of major tech giants. These large companies provide the essential funding and computing power necessary for the rapid development of emerging AI technologies.

Additionally, TIME Magazine has spotlighted notable Indian figures beyond the tech industry. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Indian Railways Minister, and Anil Kapoor, a renowned Indian actor, are among those featured. Kapoor recently won a legal case in a New Delhi high court regarding unauthorized use of his likeness in AI-generated content, highlighting the intersection of technology and personal rights.

Overall, TIME’s list reflects the dynamic and evolving landscape of AI, showcasing the influential individuals shaping its trajectory.
