Bengaluru — When Tony Klor, an American blockchain and AI enthusiast, received his new Indian visa, he didn’t just file it away quietly. Posting a photo online, he announced with a hint of pride: “It’s official! India is opening its doors to foreign blockchain & AI builders. I’ve just been granted a girthy 5-year India visa.”

Klor’s announcement quickly went viral, not only for the long validity of the visa but also for his playful comparison between leaders: “Trump says foreigners go kick rocks. Modi says welcome home bhai.” Social media reacted with enthusiasm, many celebrating India’s growing openness to global talent.

A Visa Designed for Business Travel

The B-1 visa granted to Klor is valid from September 2025 to September 2030, allowing stays of up to 180 days at a time. Unlike employment visas, it is intended for short-term business activities, including meetings, conferences, and exploring investments. While it does not allow salaried work in India, its multiple-entry feature and long duration make it a strong option for entrepreneurs, consultants, and tech innovators who frequently travel.

India’s Strategy to Attract Innovators

India’s decision to offer long-term B-1 visas is part of a broader vision to establish itself as a global hub for AI, blockchain, and startup innovation. By simplifying access for international talent, India aims to encourage cross-border collaboration, investments, and knowledge exchange—signaling that it is open for business at a global level.

Contrast with U.S. H-1B Visa

The contrast with the U.S. H-1B visa is striking. H-1B holders are tied to a specific employer, valid for three years (extendable to six), and face annual caps of 85,000 new slots. Critics note the system’s long backlogs, stringent scrutiny, and high fees introduced under former President Donald Trump, which created barriers for foreign talent seeking work in America.

India’s B-1 approach, while not a work visa, provides flexibility for long-term business travel, signaling a welcome environment for entrepreneurs and innovators who may otherwise find U.S. immigration policies restrictive.

A Message to Global Talent

For Klor and others like him, the B-1 visa represents more than just a travel document—it’s a statement. India is positioning itself as a global magnet for creative and technical minds, offering an alternative for those seeking opportunity and collaboration outside traditional employment models. The response online suggests that the policy is resonating, reinforcing India’s image as a forward-looking, innovation-friendly destination.
