Following more than a week of relentless rainfall and severe flooding in Rio Grande do Sul state, south Brazil, the region faces a devastating toll. Authorities report a staggering loss of at least 100 lives and the destruction or significant damage to nearly 100,000 homes. The National Confederation of Municipalities reveals that overflowing rivers and widespread floods have impacted approximately 1.45 million people, compelling around 200,000 residents to evacuate.

Data from the Civil Defense agency indicates that nearly 100,000 residences have suffered total or partial damage since the onset of the disaster on April 29th. The state, known for its agricultural and livestock production and bordering Argentina and Uruguay, has seen 414 out of 497 towns declare emergencies due to the storms.
Economic losses are estimated at 4.6 billion reals (about $904 million), encompassing damage to housing, public infrastructure, agriculture, livestock, industry, commerce, and services. Rio Grande do Sul experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall in just one week, equivalent to five months' worth, leading to widespread flooding and devastation across the region.
