On Sunday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi tragically perished in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province, as reported by Iranian media. The incident occurred amidst heightened regional tensions, including the ongoing Gaza conflict and Iran's recent interactions with Israel. President Raisi, in office since 2021, had vocally supported Palestine, reaffirming this stance during a recent inauguration speech for a dam project. The crash also claimed the life of Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. There were no signs of survivors, as confirmed by Iran's state television upon locating the wreckage.

In response to Raisi's untimely death, Iran announced presidential elections set for June 28. This development follows an extraordinary meeting held by Iran's three branches of government, with Vice President Mohammad Mokhber designated to assume interim duties. The announcement of Raisi's passing prompted condolences from world leaders, including Russia's Vladimir Putin, who hailed Raisi as an "outstanding politician." Additionally, NATO expressed condolences, while countries like Turkey and France extended sympathies to Iran.
The crash site, located in a mountainous region, was identified with the assistance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, the world awaits the implications of Raisi's passing on Iran's political landscape and its regional relationships. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the funeral rites, which are set to commence in the northwestern city of Tabriz before Raisi's body is brought to Tehran for final rites.
