Prince Harry has compared his royal childhood to “a real-life version of Downton Abbey, only with far more chaos,” drawing laughter at the British American Business Council’s LA lunch on Friday. Speaking to a packed audience, he said people often ask whether life inside the royal family resembles Julian Fellowes’ famed period drama. “One of those worlds has drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners and marriages to Americans,” he quipped. “And the other is just a TV show.”
The Duke of Sussex reflected on growing up within the British monarchy before eventually settling in California with his wife, Meghan Markle. He joked that moving to the United States meant learning an entirely “new world,” including celebrating 4 July — a holiday marking independence from his “great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather.”
The event also honoured Downton Abbey creator Lord Julian Fellowes, whose show depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and the staff serving them in the early 1900s. Harry used the moment to draw light-hearted parallels between scripted scandals and the real-life complexities of royal life.
During his remarks, he shifted to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. With England and Scotland set to compete on American soil, he joked that British fans would have to “behave, get through customs and past ICE” to witness the matches. Their joint qualification, he added, seemed “a Christmas miracle.”
Harry’s appearance came just days after a surprise comedic cameo on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he spoofed himself auditioning to play a Hallmark-style “Christmas prince.” The segment poked fun at US fascination with royalty — something he again laughed about during the LA event, saying America had already “elected a king.”
The Duke, once deeply embedded in royal tradition and later a soldier in Afghanistan, has rebuilt his life in California. Now raising two children with Meghan, he continues to blend humour with reflection as he speaks publicly about the contrast between his past and present worlds.
