Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs, attended the launch of a new self-driving car service. This service is made possible with the help of WeRide, a company that makes self-driving technology. The cars will operate in parts of Abu Dhabi, like Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and the route to Zayed International Airport.

The project is led by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC). Tawasul Transport will run the cars on the Uber app, with support from the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). This step shows Abu Dhabi’s goal of becoming a leader in smart and green transport.

People using Uber in Abu Dhabi can now choose a WeRide self-driving car for their trips. For now, this service will be available only in certain areas, but it will expand to other places later. At first, there will be a safety operator in the car to make sure everything goes smoothly. By 2025, the goal is to make the cars fully driverless.

If you want to try these self-driving cars, you can update your ride settings in the Uber app to get a better chance of booking one.

Dr. Abdulla Al Ghafli from ITC said, “This project is a big step in improving transport with new technology. Self-driving cars will give people a safe and exciting way to travel and help the environment by being eco-friendly.”

Badr Al-Olama from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office said, “This project shows that Abu Dhabi is leading in smart and green transport. The future of travel is already here, and Abu Dhabi is setting an example for the world.”

Ghena Jbour, General Manager of Tawasul Transport, said, “This project is part of Abu Dhabi’s plan to use the newest technology for travel. Working with Uber and WeRide, we are helping build a smarter, greener transport system.”

Noah Zych from Uber said, “We are excited to work with WeRide and ITC to bring self-driving cars to Abu Dhabi. This is an important step to make self-driving vehicles part of everyday life.”

Jennifer Li from WeRide said, “Safety is our top priority. We have over 1,800 days of running self-driving cars safely, and we are proud to bring this service to Abu Dhabi.”

This project is a big step toward making travel easier, smarter, and better for the environment. Abu Dhabi is leading the way in modern transportation.
