Google to Overhaul Play Store: New Policies to Remove Low-Quality Apps
Despite the presence of security measures like Google Play Protect, dangerous apps continue to pose a threat on the Play Store. In response, Google has announced a major cleanup initiative set to commence in six weeks. This effort aims to enhance app safety and user experience by updating its Spam and Minimum Functionality policy.

The updated policy will target apps that do not meet elevated standards for functionality and user experience. Google stated, "We’re updating the Spam and Minimum Functionality policy to ensure apps meet uplifted standards for the Play catalogue and engage users through quality functionality and content user experiences."
The new guidelines will affect apps that are considered static, lacking specific functionalities or offering minimal features, such as a single image or wallpaper. Many such apps are prevalent on the Play Store, with numerous users potentially having these on their devices. The purge is also expected to impact popular apps with millions of installs.
Previously, Google required apps to deliver a "stable, engaging, and responsive user experience." However, the company is now addressing longstanding security issues where Android has lagged behind Apple's iPhone in terms of security.
Despite the existing protections, including Play Protect, not all apps are free of malware. Some apps on the Play Store are designed to target users' bank account details, posing serious risks. Additionally, Google is working to eliminate third-party code from known malware sources to further bolster security.
