GCC, Portugal strengthen ties ahead of Kuwait meeting

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi met with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel on Friday on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

The meeting focused on enhancing GCC-Portugal relations and exploring new avenues of cooperation to serve shared interests. Both sides agreed to finalize a new date soon for signing a previously agreed memorandum of understanding (MoU).

On broader regional cooperation, Albudaiwi highlighted the upcoming Gulf-European joint ministerial meeting scheduled to take place in Kuwait on October 6. He stressed the importance of building on the outcomes of the first Gulf-European summit held in Brussels in October 2024, calling for practical steps to translate those results into action.

The talks in New York underscore the GCC’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and deepening dialogue with European countries, including Portugal.

Preparations are underway for the Kuwait meeting in October, where GCC and European foreign ministers are expected to outline concrete measures to boost cooperation.
